It is gram negative, rod shaped, capsulated and aerobic bacterium.
Habitat:
v Normal flora of cattle
v Contaminated food and water
Mode of transmission:
§ Some may act as a carrier (Human carriers)
§ Orofaecal transmission
Subtypes:
Salmonella – Typhi
Salmonella – Paratyphi
Both the above types cause enteric fever (typhoid fever).
